Global overview: the most popular messaging apps
WhatsApp, the Messenger by Meta (formerly Facebook Messenger), Instagram, and WeChat are by far the most popular messaging apps. Together, they combine more than five billion active monthly users.
WhatsApp announced in 2020 on its blog that the messaging app is actively used by over two billion people worldwide. This puts the green messaging app far ahead of all other messaging apps, such as Facebook Messenger, WeChat, Viber, Apple Business Chat, or Telegram in terms of user numbers.
In Meta’s “family of apps”, which includes the Facebook App, Instagram, the Messenger by Meta, and WhatsApp, the two messaging apps WhatsApp and the Messenger by Meta have leading roles in terms of user numbers. Together, the Meta family of apps has over seven billion active users per month. The latest official numbers of Facebook show: around 2.3 billion users use one of these apps every single day.
Also interesting: WhatsApp is now delivering roughly 100 billion messages a day in 2022, according to the latest data delivered by the company’s chief executive Mark Zuckerberg. Meta also published that every day WhatsApp users send an average of seen billion voice messages.
Meta is also ahead of its competitors when it comes to active users worldwide. With two billion active users, WhatsApp is the number one messaging app, followed by the Chinese messaging app WeChat with 1.3 billion users and the Messenger by Meta with close to one billion users.
WhatsApp favorite social media app worldwide
The new Digital 2022 Report from we are social and Hootsuite shows the continued growth in popularity of WhatsApp among the 16 to 64 age group. After 15.7% in January 2022, 16.1% of respondents in October 2022 say that Meta’s green messenger is their most popular “social media platform.” For all other relevant messengers, such as Instagram Direct, Facebook Messenger (Messenger from Meta), WeChat, iMessage and Telegram, the numbers remain almost unchanged.
The growth of Instagram is also remarkable, from 1.1 billion users in October 2020 to 1.4 billion users in October 2022. Speaking of impressive growth: Meta competitor TikTok was also able to reach the benchmark of a billion users as of October 2022. As a small player in the messenger world, Telegram also successfully manages to increase the number of active users from 550 to 700 million in 2022.
It’s noteworthy that WhatsApp is stated as an essential medium especially in the group with purchasing power aged 25 and over. This is a great opportunity for companies to reach this target group directly and to use the messenger app, which is so deeply integrated into personal everyday life (more than 17 hours of use per month on average), as a channel for customer loyalty, marketing and sales.
The Meta dynasty
There are only 25 countries in the world where WhatsApp is not the market leader. WhatsApp and the Messenger by Meta are growing about twice as fast as Facebook, the original platform (up 30% year-on-year). Currently, WhatsApp has the highest distribution of all messaging apps worldwide. If you combine all the existing apps of the Meta universe, the messenger market leaders of only ten countries in the world are not from the Meta dynasty.
